Novice and Women-Friendly Courses

All courses will be “novice friendly.” There will be no macho, street warrior atmosphere. Women will be especially welcome, and I am happy to calendar “women only” courses if so requested by two or more women.

Although larger caliber firearms may be available, and may be shot if you really must, the recommendation will always be to start small and gentle, and work upwards at the pace that is right for you. No sensible person drives a Ferrari until they know they can handle a Ford; no beginner should start with a .44 Magnum, just because that’s what someone else likes.

General Course Information

Each and every session will be conducted in accordance with NRA and other generally accepted safety practices.

  1. No live ammo should be brought to any classroom session. Leave it in your vehicle or at home.
  2. Gun muzzles will always be pointed in a safe direction.
  3. Fingers will be kept off triggers unless otherwise instructed.
  4. Any firearm brought by students to any session shall be unloaded and locked in a secure container (to comply with California law). It should not be removed from that case without my approval.
  5. All students are responsible for providing their own eye and ear protection (which may be rented or borrowed at some of the ranges).

Students who ignore these rules will be asked to leave the course; no refunds will be given.

Location: Ranges that may be used are located from west of Valencia/Santa Clarita, through Newhall and up to Lancaster and Palmdale. Some of these ranges have full facilities, others are more or less limited. Locations will, therefore, be selected as necessary and in line with students' needs and location.

Gun rental and ammunition purchase is available at some of the ranges. The lesson fee does not include the cost of these items, nor does it include range fees.

These, and all other the courses offered by me, will require the student to take a “hands on” approach, and will require the student to join in demonstrating the various learning points to me and to the rest of the class.

Fees shall be payable by check, which must be received at least ten days in advance of the course.

NRA Certified Courses

NRA Courses are run to standards and lesson contents defined by the NRA. NRA Course documentation will be provided and a final test taken. Students who pass the test will be awarded an NRA certificate.

We strongly recommend that all our students, and all gun owners generally, join the NRA.

NRA First Steps Pistol Course.
($80 each, $70 each for 2 or more students booking together.)

A 3+ hours classroom and range introduction to the safe operation of your new pistol, either revolver or semi-automatic.

If you have decided on a firearm, but haven’t purchased it yet, one may be rented from the range.

Conducted with no more than three students per course.

This course is not intended for students who have not yet decided which firearm they should purchase, instead you should see “Introduction to Handguns,” below.

NRA Basic Pistol Course.
($180 each, $155 each for 2 or more students booking together.)

A 10+ hours classroom and range introduction to pistols – both revolver and semi-automatic. Starting with the safe handling of any pistol, the course will familiarize students with the various basic types of handguns, their ammunition, safe handling and operation (firing).

I will bring a selection of different firearms for handling and discussion purposes, but these firearms will not be made available for firing (for liability reasons).

Conducted with no more than five students per session, only one person firing at any one time.

Non-NRA Courses.

Introduction to Handguns.
This is not an NRA-Approved course
($60 each, $50 each for two or more students booking together.)

2 hours.

Designed for the person new to pistols. This course starts with a discussion of safe handling rules, and the different types of handguns. We will discuss the appropriate handguns for specific use (such as home defense or target shooting), and follow up by firing at the range. This is a less structured course than the NRA First Steps course.

I will bring a selection of different firearms for handling and discussion purposes, but these firearms will not be made available for firing (because of liability issues). However, a large choice of rental guns is available at the Oak Tree Gun Club range, and a single fee of (currently) $10 covers any number of these, one at a time. Ammunition for rental guns must be purchased at the range.

Conducted with no more than 3 students per course.
